Artist Info - Matthew Roderick A visual artist exploring and investigating the human condition through photography. Currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Photography at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Participates in higher education as a member of the Visual Arts Faculty at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, MI. Course concepts include digital imaging and traditional photography. Visual experiences range from traditional/digital photo processes, historical photo restoration, drawing, image preparation/optimization, and web design for several on-line resources. These images are part of a series of work that I am currently exploring. I am interested in the changing post-industrial landscape of the Midwest, comprising largely of abandoned structures and spaces. These images speak to the contradiction of discarded spaces where land is considered a disposable commodity, while it is actually a limited resource. The by-product of this process of abandonment impacts populations marginalized by poverty, which continues the cycle of dislocation and interrupts a connection with the earth and a sense of place in the community. |
